In the rich tapestry of Buddhism, a bodhisattva stands as an individual wholly committed to the pursuit of enlightenment, known as bodhi, or the revered state of Buddhahood. Rooted in the Early Buddhist schools and central to Theravāda Buddhism, a bodhisattva is one who, having resolved to attain Buddhahood, receives confirmation from a living Buddha that this noble aspiration will indeed come to fruition.
The canvas of Mahāyāna Buddhism paints a broader perspective, defining a bodhisattva as anyone who nurtures bodhicitta—an altruistic intention to attain Buddhahood for the betterment of all sentient beings. These Mahayana bodhisattvas shine with exceptional compassion, tirelessly dedicating themselves to the path of awakening. Their essence is characterized by virtues such as loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. Additionally, they hone skills and cultivate transcendent knowledge and skillful means, essential tools in their journey towards Buddhahood.
In Theravāda Buddhism, bodhisattvas are regarded as rare and extraordinary individuals. However, the landscape shifts in Mahāyāna Buddhism, which believes that the bodhisattva path is open to all. In this expansive tradition, Mahāyāna Buddhists actively encourage individuals to embrace the bodhisattva ethos and actively contribute to the collective awakening. Reverence is bestowed upon bodhisattva figures like Avalokiteshvara, Maitreya, and Manjushri, who are widely venerated for their spiritual prowess and their profound capacity to assist all living beings.
Embark on a journey of understanding the profound path of bodhisattvas in Buddhism—where compassion, altruism, and dedication converge to illuminate the way towards enlightenment for the benefit of all. Less
